Fresh MARTA Markets Open for Season

Staff Report From Metro Atlanta CEO

Wednesday, April 24th, 2019

The Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) will open its popular Fresh MARTA Markets at West End on April 23 and Five Points on April 26, and in early May at H.E. Holmes, College Park, and Bankhead Stations.

Initially launched in 2015, Fresh MARTA Markets provide nutritious, affordable, locally-sourced produce in neighborhoods considered "food deserts" or areas where the availability of fresh food is limited. The successful markets made more than 46,000 pounds of fresh produce available in 2018.

"We realize all communities don't have adequate access to fresh and affordable produce," said MARTA General Manager & CEO Jeffrey Parker. "These markets not only serve our riders, but because of their convenient locations, they are a fresh food resource for entire communities. We’re bridging the nutritional gap from the convenience of our rail stations."

MARTA, along with managing partners Community Farmers Markets, Organix Matters, and Food Oasis Atlanta will provide fresh produce once a week from now through the first week of December. The markets are supported by the Atlanta Community Food Bank, Open Hand, and Wholesome Wave Georgia. The Fresh MARTA Markets are open Tuesdays at West End, Wednesdays at Bankhead and H.E. Holmes, Thursdays at College Park, and Fridays at Five Points from 3 p.m. until 7 p.m.

The markets accept cash, credit, debit, and Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT)/Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). SNAP is doubled at the market, meaning $5 swiped is $10 to spend.
