The Atlanta office of global architecture and design firm Perkins+Will was the winningest design firm during the recent 2019 American Institute of Architects (AIA) Georgia Design and Honor Awards, with four design awards. The AIA Georgia awards recognize excellence in architectural design and celebrate the contributions of architects, designers and owners to the built environment. Perkins+Will’s winning projects ranged from a corporate office renovation and rebranding to the creation of a state-of-the-art healthcare center. Projects awarded included Interface Headquarters in Midtown Atlanta with an Award of Honor, 200 4th Ave South in Nashville received the Award of Excellence, HMC received an Award of Honor and Newell Hoboken an Award of Merit.
Located in Midtown Atlanta, the new AIA-award-winning Interface headquarters resides in the repurposed 1280 West Peachtree Street, a formerly non-descript 1960s-era office building. The stunning new facility, dubbed “Base Camp” by Interface employees, reflects the company’s global initiative to create inspiring spaces for employees and customers. The building design was inspired by “Factory as a Forest,” a program that aims to redesign Interface facilities to match the performance of their local ecosystems. The building literally wears this commitment on its façade which features a forest-themed wrap that provides natural light and reduces heat.
“Choosing to repurpose an existing building to create a home base within established infrastructure and transit – that sends a message to the community,” says Bruce McEvoy, design principal with Perkins+Will. “Finding new ways to use existing built resources is an important component of the ongoing conversation about sustainability. By repurposing an existing facility, we were already miles ahead of our sustainability goals from the very beginning – far ahead of what we could have achieved if we built from scratch.” McEvoy added, “We are tremendously proud to have been involved with this project and thrilled that 2019 American Institute of Architects (AIA) Georgia Design and Honor Awards chose to recognize this important project among others.”
