Scovill Fasteners, one of the world’s largest manufacturers of apparel and light industrial fasteners, has provided a gift to Piedmont College that will be used for the construction of the Conservatory of Music.

The 20,750 square-foot facility, to be completed this fall, will help elevate the college’s music program to be one of the finest in the Southeast. Located adjacent to the Chapel on Central Avenue, the $9.9 million project includes two classrooms, a concert hall, nine teaching studios, office space, and a grand foyer. Existing music facilities, including student practice rooms, offices, music library, and student lounge will be upgraded as well.

Scovill, founded in 1802, employs more than 150 employees in Clarkesville where it has been located since 1957. Every week, the team produces and ships over 80 million buttons, snaps, grommets, and more around the world that will be used on football helmets, jeans, boats, baby clothes, and military equipment as well as other products.

“Piedmont College and Scovill Fasteners share similar interests in community development,” said Scovill Chief Executive Officer H. Craig Stoudt. “We are both long-time members of Habersham County and hope to ensure that the future brings continual growth and opportunity for all those who live, work, and serve in the area.”

Founded in 1987, the Piedmont Music Department includes degree programs in music performance, church music, music education, musical theatre, and arts administration. Graduates of the program have been admitted to the finest graduate music programs in the country, and the college’s performing groups have achieved national acclaim.

“Over 200 students participate in music academic programs, choirs, and ensembles each year,” said Piedmont College President James F. Mellichamp. “We are grateful for Scovill’s investment in this facility, which will benefit our students and members of our community for many years.”

Beyond Piedmont’s impact on music education, the college serves the local and regional communities by providing access to high-quality music and arts events in the region. Each year, the music department hosts approximately 40 public concerts and recitals that are free to attend.
