The City of Atlanta announced the release of the first Safer Streets Pop-up Infrastructure Report. The reporthighlights the City’s results for its temporary pop-up bike lane on 10th Street. The pop-up bike lane is one of many initiatives addressing safety as part of the Bottoms Administration’s Action Plan for Safer Streets.

“We want to ensure safety for all Atlantans regardless of their means of transportation,” said City of Atlanta Chief Bicycle Officer Cary Bearn. “Thank you to Mayor Bottoms for leading us towards the future of transportation in our city. The results of this report highlight our commitment to safety and multi-model transportation options for residents and visitors.”

The 10th Street Pop-Up Bike Lane examined how quickly the City could test a new street design, measured the safety impacts of the pop-up lane and studied overall transportation operations for bicycles within the city.

The location was chosen due to its proximity to the Atlanta BeltLine and surrounding Midtown neighborhoods frequented by cyclists. Results showed top positive safety improvements including:

Safety increased for all road users. 

Bike and scooter rides increased.

Fewer people rode bikes or scooters on the sidewalk.

Car travel time was initially slower, but signal adjustments resulted in travel times similar to before the pop-up.

Access to destinations was preserved and even improved for many users.

By the end of 2021, the City of Atlanta aims to triple its on-street protected bike network while making safety improvements to more than 20 miles of streets.
