Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) recently received the Envision Silver award for the Taxiway and Runway 9L Replacement Project. The Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure (ISI) celebrates civil engineering and sustainable infrastructure through the Envision award designations.

The ISI Envision rating system measures infrastructure across the full range of environmental, social, and economic impacts. This project is ATL's first to earn an Envision award.

“This award reflects the exceptional efforts of our aviation professionals along with our partners in achieving a higher level of sustainability,” said Airport General Manager John Selden. “While we will enjoy this honor, we will continue to strive to maintain and surpass our stated mission to be the most sustainable airport in the world.”

The Taxiway and Runway 9L Replacement Project comprises multiple elements, including replacing pavement in the Center Airfield Complex and portions of runway 9L-27R and adjacent taxiways. It also necessitated adjusting airfield lighting and signage, moving drainage structures and drainage lines, constructing an embankment, and adjusting airfield striping and navigational aid structures.

Key organizations involved in planning, design and construction of the project include the Department of Aviation, City of Atlanta, and Aviation Infrastructure Solutions Joint Venture team — Michael Baker International, Pond & Company, and Corporate Environmental Risk Management.

“Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport and the City of Atlanta are focused on instituting sustainability in all construction projects. We met the Envision goals using several methods on projects by using recycled materials, LED lighting, and protecting the groundwater,” said Norma Click, director of Airside and Landside Operations, Planning and Development for Hartsfield-Jackson.

As a 2019 Envision Silver award winner, the ATL Taxiway and Runway 9L Pavement Replacement Project met criteria in the following areas:

QUALITY OF LIFE - Implementation of a sustainability management plan; job creation

LEADERSHIP - Implementation of a sustainability management plan

RESOURCE ALLOCATION - Recycled and regionally sourced materials

NATURAL WORLD - Protection of surface and groundwater quality

CLIMATE AND RISK - Assessing climate risk
