The Fulton Industrial Community Improvement District (CID) recently completed a comprehensive and forward-thinking sustainability plan for the Fulton Industrial area, the largest industrial corridor in the eastern United States. Home to more than 1,000 businesses, approximately 28,000 jobs and 52 million square feet of industrial space, the creation of a sustainability framework plan addresses several interrelated infrastructure initiatives that are necessary to meet current and future growth demands for one of the region’s busiest industrial areas.
"Anticipating and planning ahead for the needs of the district is one of the ways the Fulton Industrial CID is helping to build a future-ready industrial hub. Having a comprehensive, multi-point strategy to address a sustainability infrastructure in the district is critical to meeting the evolving demands of the freight and logistics industry,” said Gil Prado, executive director of the Fulton Industrial CID.
The plan, which took 18 months to complete, also addresses streetscapes, sidewalks, gateways and public art, and connections to the Chattahoochee RiverLands initiative. In addition to the CID, district stakeholders, government representatives and a multi-disciplinary team of consultants participated in the creation of the plan which was developed in three phases including an initial needs assessment based on stakeholder feedback. The final phase focused on the development of specific concepts, project recommendations, cost estimates and proposed implementation timing. The final report includes an action plan that addresses in detail how and when each project could be implemented based on funding and grant opportunities.
Key Plan Elements
-
Redevelopment opportunities: Concepts for an industrial marketplace at I-20 and Fulton Industrial Boulevard and an airport innovation district surrounding the Fulton County Executive Airport.
-
Clean energy: Strategies for freight and logistics companies along with public-facing infrastructure for local residents and those who work in the district.
-
Truck parking and staging: Potential truck parking solutions to alleviate unauthorized parking along shoulders of roadways and within travel lanes on side streets.
-
Streetscape, sidewalks and landscaping: Continuation of CID initiatives to improve roadways, intersections, vehicular and pedestrian safety, and to create a cohesive sense of place for the district with gateway signage and public art.
-
Bus stop enhancements: Improvements to existing bus stops for those who rely on MARTA bus service to reach their place of employment in the district.
-
Chattahoochee RiverLands Greenway Trail: Work with Trust for Public Land to create connections and trails within the 11-mile segment of the river that borders the west side of the district.
“The great news is that many projects recommended in the plan can be implemented quickly; in fact, immediately following the completion of the plan, the CID began streetscape and gateway enhancements at the intersections of Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive and Fulton Industrial Boulevard and Campbellton Road and Fulton Industrial Boulevard. Additionally, several clean energy initiatives included in the plan are already underway in the district. There are a number of EV charging stations currently or recently installed. The city of South Fulton has installed six free, publicly accessible EV chargers at city hall on Fulton Industrial Boulevard and Fulton County has installed two EV charging stations at the new animal shelter at the top end of the district,” said Prado.
