Georgia Commute Options received a proclamation from the City of Atlanta on Monday, Oct. 21 declaring October “Biketober Month.” Biketober is a free, fun challenge that invites riders of all experience levels across Metro Atlanta to get on their bikes throughout October. Georgia Commute Options is a program funded by the Georgia Department of Transportation and managed by the Atlanta Regional Commission.
This year’s Biketober theme – ‘Spark Joy’ – builds on previous year’s challenges, and participation has been widespread. A few highlights thus far:
-
More than 350 workplaces across metro Atlanta have joined this year’s Biketober challenge, surpassing last year’s participation and shows that enthusiasm for biking continues to grow across the community,
-
Over 2,300 riders have logged trips, an impressive pace underscoring how quickly enthusiasm spreads once the first pedals start turning. Each mile reflects the collective energy of people choosing connection, health, and sustainability, whether they are first-time riders or seasoned commuters,
-
In true Biketober spirit, more than 600 participants shared that they joined because a friend, coworker, or family member encouraged them to take part, showing how word of mouth and community relationships remain at the heart of the challenge.
“Biketober has been an inspiration for the region, and I’ve been inspired to get on a bike myself,” said ARC Executive Director and CEO Anna Roach. “We continue to build momentum each year and the proclamation from the city further exemplifies our commitment to sharing the benefits and joys of bike riding in metro Atlanta.”
Atlanta City Council member Byron Amos read the proclamation and highlighted the efforts of ARC and GCO to advance the city’s goal of sustainability and connectivity by promoting active transportation that reduces congestion and improves air quality and fosters stronger, healthier communities.
Since its launch in 2014, Biketober has made a tremendous impact on the metro Atlanta community, collectively logging more than 3 million miles and saving over 416,000 pounds of CO2 along the way. To keep excitement rolling, participants can earn prizes simply for riding or for encouraging others to join in. This year’s rewards include a $1,000 Airbnb gift card and e-bikes from Outback Bikes and Edison Bicycles.
“Belly laughs, beads of sweat on my forehead, soft and forceful breezes on my face, indescribable joy, inner strength – these are just some of the experiences I have been blessed to enjoy during the BIKETOBER Atlanta Bike Challenge.” ~ Daundria P., first time challenge participant.
